‘Dressed’ Screening at Texas Theatre on Oct. 28

October 26, 2011

From time to time we come across fantastic movie screenings in the Dallas area. “Dressed” is one of those that you must not miss.

“Dressed”, the inspiring documentary about self-taught clothing designer Nary Manivong, who defied the odds of a broken childhood and homelessness to ultimately show his collection at New York’s famed Fashion Week, regionally premieres in Dallas at the historic Texas Theatre on Oct. 28.

Filmed on location in New York City, as well as Manivong’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio, “Dressed” beautifully illustrates the strength and resilience of the human spirit as Manivong navigates through one of the toughest businesses in the world – the fashion industry.

“I remember being inspired by the beauty of clothes, and what it would be like to create garments for the type of woman I want to dress,” said Manivong, who eventually partnered with Alexandria Hilfiger to begin their own design label, NAHM, which is an anagram of the two designers’ initials and also means “water” in Laotian.

Manivong and Hilfiger debuted their first collection together this past February during the Fall 2011 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.  Both Manivong and Hilfiger will be attending the Dallas screening event, along with the film’s director David Swajeski and executive producer Maryanne Grisz.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the fashion industry,” said Swajeski.  “I did research on the industry as a whole and watched films on the subject. Every film about fashion was done from the point of view of a big brand or a fashion icon. I wanted to look at the industry from the perspective of a young designer, a designer who had no resources, just a dream, a passion and a belief.”

The “Dressed” screening in Dallas coincides with several fashion industry-related market events occurring throughout the DFW Metroplex that same week.  A limited number of seats for this special premiere screening will be available to the public through the Texas Theatre and El Centro College.

First opened in 1931 and recently restored to some of its original lavish grandeur, the Texas Theatre was briefly owned by renowned aviator and film producer Howard Hughes and later became infamously known as the site where Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended shortly after he assassinated President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

The Texas Theater was subsequently added to the National Register of Historic Places 40 years later and is currently owned by the Oak Cliff Foundation, a not-for-profit neighborhood association, and managed by Aviation Cinemas, which regularly presents a wide range of art films and other repertory cinema events.
